SRK's view on Slumdog Millionaire

Thursday, January 29, 2009 |

Many critics and prominent industry people have been fuming about the fact that the Oscar nominated film Slumdog Millionaire highlights poverty in Mumbai. But the Baadshah of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan has no problem with it.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/callravi/Rsw2Zlgu0GI/AAAAAAAADOo/A0La5ztSoZU/srk.jpg

He thinks that the poverty seen in the film is a reality and hence wrong for people to become cynical when the film is getting international acclaim.

Shahrukh, who has read the original book as well as the script said, "Isn't that (poverty and slums) a reality? If you (critics) have a problem with the word slumdog, why don't you look positively and see that there is a word millionaire or 'crorepati' also."

King Khan has returned from Los Angeles after a month-long schedule of Karan Johar's My name is Khan. He said, "I have just returned from the US and people there have become crazy about the film and its music. The film's sound is also good apart from a good story and screenplay. The film deserves all awards."

However he doesn't regret turning down Anil Kapoor's role in the film. He said maybe he wouldn't have done justice to the role of a game show host like Anil Kapoor. He was already hosting 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' (KBC) and later 'Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hai' during the time Danny Boyle shot the film and will do the new season too.

He added, "I love awards and I hope to feature in a film comprising Indian cast and crew some day which will go to win these awards. The success of Slumdog Millionaire worldwide is an incentive to all Indian filmmakers."

And we always thought that the Baadshah was totally in love with Bollywood only and didn't really care about anything else. It's nice to see him talk with an international perspective for a change!

The leading lady of Bollywood today, Priyanka Chopra seems to be building a fine working rapport with Rajasthan.

http://www.bollywood-stars.net/images/priyanka-pink.jpg

She has shot for her film Drona here, and then she came back in July last year to shoot for a commercial near Jaipur’s Jal Mahal, and now she’s back in Jodhpur again in just six months time to shoot for yet another commercial, this time for a beauty soap brand. Priyanka landed at the Jodhpur airport on Tuesday afternoon amidst heavy security. Our source present at the airport said, “Priyanka landed here around 1 pm. Though a large number of her fans had turned up to greet her and catch a glimpse of their star, she preferred to quickly push through the surging crowd and head for her hotel.” The actress will be in Jodhpur till today. On her earlier visit to Jaipur, Priyanka who was unavailable for comment on Tuesday, had told JT, “I just love the state and the fact that its people are still connected to their cultural roots. I want to go around the place, but my hectic schedule doesn’t allow me to do so.”

Now when all are gearing up to celebrate this love-ly day, Neha Dhupia seems to be in a different mood altogether.

http://im.rediff.com/movies/2004/jul/14poster1.jpg

She tells us that she hates Valentine’s Day. Now let us assure you that everything’s alright between Neha and her boyfriend Ritwik Bhattacharya. Neha just finds the whole thing oh-so-stupid. “I think it’s really a stupid concept. I don’t understand why do we even need to celebrate that day? It’s not a festival to celebrate; so what’s the significance of it,” she asks. But there could be another reason for this hatred. “I was very fat when I was in school,” reveals Neha, “And very ugly, too. Every Valentine’s all girls used to get chocolates except me...” Now, now, that’s one sad story. But how much ever you may hate the day, we’re sure Rits can give you loads of chocolates for all those years that you didn’t get any! Cheer up Neha.

After 'Munnabhai' Sanjay Dutt, it could be the turn of Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls as a Samajwadi Party candidate.

http://www.celebrity9.com/img/aishwarya-rai/aishwarya-rai.jpg

Samajwadi Party workers and leaders in Bihar have decided to offer Aishwarya the party ticket for the Madhepura seat against Janata Dal-United (JD-U) national president Sharad Yadav, a party official said.

In view of the overwhelming demand of the party workers, the Samajwadi Party Bihar parliamentary board has recommended Aishwarya's name to party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Senior party leader Tulsi Singh said that a large number of party workers and people had requested him to convince Mulayam Singh to give the party ticket to Aishwarya from Madhepura. Singh is chairman of the party's state parliamentary board.

The Madhepura seat is held by the Rashtriya Janata Dal's Pappu Yadav, who is serving life imprisonment in Tihar Jail in Delhi for his involvement in the murder of Left leader Ajit Sarkar. His wife Ranjita Ranjan is a Lok Janshakti Party MP from Saharsa.

JD-U leader Sharad Yadav is likely to contest from Madhepura, his old seat.

In the last Lok Sabha polls in 2004, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, the RJD chief, won from Madhepura by defeating Sharad Yadav. Lalu Prasad later resigned the Madhepura seat and opted to retain the Chapra seat.

Madhepura, a rural seat, is dominated by the backward Yadav caste. Last year, Madhepura was hit by devastating floods when the Kosi river changed its course after a breach upstream in Nepal.

If Priyanka Chopra declares from the rooftops that she is Shah Rukh Khan's biggest fan then it is with reason. The superstar, who has been taking more than a passing interest in the music of the films he produces, decided to give away a large portion of his duet in " Billu Barber " to her.

http://img1.chakpak.com/se_images/178694_-1_564_none/srk-priyanka-wallpaper.jpg

"Shah Rukh took very close interest in each one of the songs. He isn't a musician, but he has an instinctive ear for music. It takes him just a few seconds to approve or cut down a track," told composer Pritam Chakraborty.

With the songs meant for Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, Pritam faced no problems.

"Shah Rukh loved his songs with Kareena ('Marjani') and Deepika ('Love mera hit hit'). They were straightforward dance songs with shared grooves between Shah Rukh and Kareena and Deepika," said Pritam.

The song with Priyanka needed special treatment and Shah Rukh made Pritam re-work and re-record the song.

"Shah Rukh's song with Priyanka 'Khuda-ae-kher' is not an item song. It's a love ballad that the pair playing Bollywood superstars emote to in front of the camera. Being a love song Shah Rukh felt there wasn't enough of the female presence in the vocals. He made me re-record the song with more for the female vocalist (Dominique) to do since he wanted Priyanka to have an equal number of lines," the composer said.

"It was entirely Shah Rukh's idea to give Priyanka more lines in the song. He's a very generous entertainer. If you see him on screen he never tries to steal the limelight from his heroines. Even ' Khai ke paan banaras wala ' in 'Don' had a lot of Priyanka in it although it was entirely Shah Rukh's song," Pritam added.

Asked about Shah Rukh's generosity, Priyanka sighed and said: "What do I say? Now do you know why he's my favourite?"

Irrfan Khan and Lara Dutta, who play a rustic couple in "Billu Barber", will later be seen enacting the same Shah Rukh-Priyanka ballad.

Odissi dance Guru all Praise for Shilpa

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 |

Bollywood actresses Shilpa Shetty and Jayaprada took lessons in the classical Indian dance form of Odissi for an India-China joint film venture. And the Orissa-based dance guru is all praise for Shilpa's grace and commitment.

http://www.bollywoodblog.com/images/1566_Shilpa-Shetty.jpg

"Shilpa Shetty went through a week-long Odissi dance workshop under my supervision at Kollam (in Kerala), where the film is being shot," Odissi dance Guru Ratikant Mohapatra told IANS in Bhubaneswar.

Tentatively titled "The Desire", the film will see Shilpa sharing screen space with Chinese superstar Xia Yu, who is considered the Shah Rukh Khan of China. Produced jointly by Sharad Hegde from Mumbai and Tracy Shiyun from China, it is being directed by R. Sarath.

"I was specially invited by director R. Sarath to teach Odissi to Shilpa and choreograph the song for her in the film," said Mohapatra, son of legendary Odissi exponent late Kelucharan Mohapatra.

"My working experience with Shilpa Shetty was very good. As an actress and Bharatnatyam dancer she was able to understand the style and form of Odissi and its execution," he said.

"Practising in the morning and evening, Shilpa had no star tantrums and she proved herself to be a committed artiste. Her performance in the shooting was also satisfying," Mohapatra said.

The dance guru said the training session took place between January 14-19, while Jaya Prada also took lessons for a brief period.

The Indo-Chinese project, under the banner of C-9 Motion Pictures in association with Indish Creations, also features Anupam Kher, Sachin Khedekar, Sheetal Menon and Nakul Vaid.

"The Desire" revolves around Goutami (Shilpa), an accomplished Odissi dancer, and a talented artist Jai Leang (Yu) and follows the journey of their respective lives until they are separated and brought together again by destiny.

Yu is not the first Chinese actor to star alongside Bollywood stars. Veteran Chinese martial arts actor Gordon Liu was seen in Nikhil Advani's "Chandni Chowk To China" that released on January 16.

Mohapatra, who is director of Srujan, the dance school started by his father Kelucharan Mohapatra in Bhubaneswar, was involved in composing the music for the dance sequences as well.

"Sarath told me to compose the music for the Odissi (dance sequences) and choose an Oriya song. Then Shri Lakshmikant Palit was invited to compose the music and I composed the rhythm of Odissi Mardala," Mohapatra added.

"Presenting Odissi dance in a Bollywood film with its purity and form intact, along with Odissi music and Oriya literature is certainly an achievement for me personally, for our state and for the Oriya people," the dancer said.

It’s great to see these glam-sham mams on the big screen. And it was even more pleasurable to bump into them at this do.

The three lovely women — Madhuri Dixit, Preity Zinta, Sushmita Sen — are looking as gorgeous as ever. And yes, they all seem to have lost tons of weight, so much so that we think Mads, Zints, and Sush are soon going to be size zero! It’s the fad of ‘zero-giri’ that seems to be taking over our filmi duniya. Watch out girls!

Kareena Kapoor is one of the busiest actresses these days.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcTESBiT-X3tWoSq9vYEPs-UDWy2rrgaNFyGXBcooyLnCu_3APzl34JnW7-Xrz3IiuBKHvxgRmXc-fhj9xCDwD59g1vN3ApljFurYUSnMn0elqYMCZGlISJf-FyMujjzbNTQezf9MCpMdG/s400/Kareena-Kapoor-Pic-077_sm.jpg

And if she’s not shooting for a film, she is busy with her many endorsements, and if it’s not films or endorsements, then she loves vacationing in the Swiss Alps with boyfriend Saif. That leaves her with very little family time, you know!

So now, our gorgeous Bebo is complaining. In the last few months she hardly got any quality time with family.

And was actually feeling homesick! So what did big sis Karisma do? She waited for Kareena in Mumbai and they both indulged in a lot of gupshup. We are sure Bebo is r

Ghajini girl Asin has been in news ever since she made her debut in Bollywood. After Ghajini she is looking forward to Vipul Shah's London Dreams. According to a recent buzz, she is in the good books of Salman Khan who gifted a glass doll to her on Onam.

http://mimg.sulekha.com/hindi/pokiri/pokiri-hindi_m.jpg

But Asin denies the report of being over-friendly with Salman. She informs that no exchange of gifts happened on the sets. When asked about her cordial friendship with Sallu. Asin reacts, "I don't know how to react to it because it's absolutely false. I have not got any gift at all from Salman."

Speaking about return gift, she said, "In fact I read that he gave me a gift on Onam and I gave a return gift on Eid which is absolutely false because we were shooting from early morning to late night. Thus there was no time to buy gifts or exchange gifts."

Being a professional Asin knows that such things are part and parcel of her profession. "When that news came out, the whole unit was laughing because everyone knows what the truth is. Everyone knew how we are working on this project. We all are professionals," She signed off.

The unconventional looking Kangana Ranaut has made it in Bollywood her own way, but she still remains controversy's favourite child.
http://www.outlookindia.com/images/glitteart_kangana_ranaut_20070625.jpg
Be it for the acid attack on her sister Rangoli, her affair with the much older Aditya Panscholi, his outburst against her later and the her liason with Adhyayan Suman, she has always created news. Well, that has helped a lot too, but that's another story. There have been spats with her current man's parents too.

Recently Shekhar Suman had reportedly yelled at Kangana during a debate on money-making films. He reportedly went on to make a grave remark and blatantly told her that he knew what her knowledge was and how she kept the fire burning in the kitchen. He then went on to give an interview hinting that he really doesn't approve of Kangana much.

The actress whose Raaz — The Mystery Continues, opens today says, "I had a hearty laugh over that bit of news. They seem to be very fond of me. If ever our parents object to our relationship, we will end it. It's family that matters the most." More over some people have been saying that the dame has had plastic surgery as many felt her looks changed dramatically ever since the publicity promos and release of 'Fashion'.

She says, "I have not had plastic surgery. My face looks different as I have put on weight. I was sick of my thin body. The world is dying to get skinny, and I like to be different. In Kites' I will look still more different." She has learnt the diplomacy game well along with other tactics to survive in the industry. That very well explains her coping up well in the big bad world of Bollywood.

The 15th Nokia Star Screen Awards night has been in the news for all the wrong reasons and most of which has been witnessed by the TV audience. But there is also one Bollywood persona who will never forget the explosive 15th Nokia Star Screen Night apart from many others is Bipasha Basu.

Sources inform, "Bipasha was to do her Lucky Boy act from Bachna Ae Haseeno. But her act was supposed to be a pre-shot act. However, due to some delay it was decided to shoot post the presentation ceremony. But the infamous Sajid Khan-Ashutosh Gowariker spat delayed the awards ceremony by a good 20-25 minutes thus delaying the entire event nearly by an hour and a half. The stipulated time to shoot was already over, which left the organizers in a quandary as her act was a part of the content and the promo were already on air. Meanwhile, amidst all this, Bipasha was in no mood to do her act and had already changed her attire and removed her make up. Finally organizers managed to take the permission to shoot but until then Bipasha was very tired and showed her reluctance to get ready all over again and do her performance."

"But eventually she agreed. But her body language clearly displayed her disinterest in doing the act as it was in contrast with her on screen superb energetic performance which audience enjoyed in the movie," concluded the source.

Post marriage there were rumours in the industry circles that Aishwarya Bachchan will prefer to do films only with hubby Abhishek Bachchan. The couple was earlier seen in films like Kuch Naa Kaho, Umrao Jaan, Guru and Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar Raj paired opposite each other. It seems the rumours to some extent are ringing true if one looks at her next line up of releases. While she has three films with hubby Abhishek she has only one film signed opposite another star, Akshay Kumar.

http://bollywood.celebden.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/ash-abhi2.jpg

Presently the couple is shooting for Mani Ratnam's Ravana in jungles of Madhya Pradesh at a virgin locale called, Orcha. Post that film, both are slated to star in Ad filmmaker Abhinay Deo's next after Delhi Belly. The yet untitled film is said to be a action thriller which will be shot extensively in Greece, Thailand, Istanbul and London. Besides Ash and Abhi, Boman Irani has been finalised but rest of the cast is yet to be decided.

Next they have been approached by filmmaker Rajiv Menon's Sur which will be a remake of yesteryear classic Abhimaan but the project is still undecided. The Akshay Kumar that she has signed is a Vipul Shah production and will have her playing mother to a 13 year old kid. One can recollect her refusing Karan Johar's Dostana.

Bollywood beauty Priyanka Chopra has done a grave mistake by not making her relationship with actor Harman Baweja public. Now, rumourmongers are all out to link her to every man she meets. This time, it is actor Shahid Kapoor.

http://i.indiafm.com/stills/celebrities/priyankachopra/priyanka41.jpg

Shahid-Priyanka duo were in the news for their hot scenes in Vishal Bharadwaj's Kaminay, including a kissing scene. Now, their off-screen closeness has made the unit of the film suspicious. It is said that they look more like lovers than just friends.

Well, we can't rule out the rumour because Priyanka has not admitted Harman as her boyfriend.

Aamir Khan was the surprise guest at the post-premiere party of Slumdog Millionaire at the J W Marriott on Thursday night!

Everyone at the premiere of SM was in great spirits after the Oscar nominations were announced. After the premiere, Danny, Anil Kapoor, the Fox Studio team, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and wife Anupama, Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, Shekhar Kapur, Sudhir Mishra and Baba and Tanvi Azmi decided to celebrate. Danny asked Aamir, who was at the premier, to join them.

Anil admits, "We popped champagne. Aamir is very happy for the SM team. Shekhar said SM was the biggest Indian hit worldwide and would touch 1000 crore. Apparently, it's already crossed 400 crore." It was baffling of Khan to celebrate when his own film didn't make the cut at Oscars, "A really large-hearted guy will feel happy for others and Aamir is that."

Anil was thrilled at the turnout at the premiere. "Everyone I called came. I missed my Chembur friends three of whom have died Babban (who drowned), Rajeev Khanna (Gul), Guru (who succumbed to alcohol) and Naresh Jhangiani. They were my childhood friends. Every year, I attend all the festivals there and whenever there's a big function in Chembur, I go."

Anil has a special for the thespian actor, Dilip Kumar. "Yusufsaab has always been there for me right from my Mashaal days. I invited him and Sairaji personally. I always go to their house and meet them over a cup of tea, samosas, pattice and Yusuf saab's favorite sponge cake. Youngsters today should take a lesson from him on how to take part in other people's happiness. Dilipsaab is the greatest living legend. It's a risk for Dilipsaab to go out of his home but he always makes the effort. May God give him a much longer life and may he live for 100 years..."

Joining the league of international stars like Victoria Beckham, Madonna and Jennifer Lopez, Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor is all set to launch her own website.

http://www.bollywoodblog.com/images/1984_Kareena%20Kapoor2.jpg

The site would inform netizens about the actress' latest fashion trends.

"Kareena's official website is going to be on an absolutely tech savvy format. It's going to be on the lines of the sites of international stars like Victoria Beckham, Madonna and Jennifer," a source close to the actress revealed on Tuesday.

The source added: "Her website is going to be more fashion oriented. The site will have updates not only of Kareena's fashion trends but also other trends that take place all over the globe".

The actress has been known for her fashion presence even in the fashion fraternity and looks forward to sharing her trend sense with her fans through the site.

"She has sound knowledge about the fashion industry and the website will give her a chance to share her fashion knowledge with her fans. There have been a number of occasions when Kareena has even actively participated in designing her own costumes for films," said the source.

Kareena is also the brand ambassador of a global fashion retail chain Globus.

http://bollywood.celebden.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/akshay_levis_bare.jpgAkshay is very flexible, lean and fit
picture: Viral Bhayani
He himself has a well-toned body and exercises regularly, but actor-turned-producer Suniel Shetty says when it comes to the fittest body in tinsel town, Akshay Kumar wins hands down as he has maintained his physique throughout his 18-year career.

"Akshay has the fittest body in Bollywood, and all these years we have seen him getting better day by day," Suneil Shetty told IANS.

"He is very flexible, lean and fit and to maintain this level of fitness he has worked out with dedication and discipline over the years," said Suniel, who was in New Delhi to launch a gym.

Suniel, who is currently working with Akshay in "De Dana Dan", teamed up with the action hero for the first time in "Hum Hain Bemisaal" followed by hits like "Mohra", "Hera Pheri" and "Dhadkan".

Suniel added that Akshay does all his stunts himself and doesn’t think twice before jumping from a cliff unlike other actors.

"I know so many actors who claim that they do their stunts themselves, but the scenario is completely opposite. To know the reality, you should check with stunt masters. That’s why I believe fitness just doesn’t come with appearance, it is something that is inside you," Suniel said.

Akshay entered Bollywood in 1991 with "Saugandh" and earned the action hero tag with movies like "Khiladi" and "Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi".

Suniel feels it is a good trend to see stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan displaying their six-pack-abs and eight-pack-abs for "Om Shanti Om" and "Ghajini" respectively, but adds that it would be even better if they are able to maintain that physique.

"Body-building is not a difficult task; what in fact is tough is to maintain that sculpted body. It is really a good sign that actors are giving due attention to their fitness levels, but the most important thing is to see how long they can sustain that look," the actor said.

"The other good thing that has come out of this whole eight-pack-abs promotion is that people now want to achieve a certain level of fitness," Suniel said.

But Suniel has a word of caution for people who want to acquire eight-pack-abs.

"Fitness necessarily does not mean achieving eight-pack-abs, it requires lot of dedication, focus and good eating habits - all this can help you in getting a perfect body. But one should not go in for shortcuts like steroids because it can be harmful in the long run," Suniel added.

The actor candidly admits that when he forayed into films, all he had was his well-built muscular body and that fetched him roles. Now after spending 16 years in the industry, he feels his achievement is the result of his sincerity and dedication towards his work.

Suniel turned producer in 2003 and his Popcorn Motion Pictures Ltd has produced films like "Khel", "Rakht" and "Bhagam Bhag".

The actor will next be seen in Inder Kumar’s comic caper "Daddy Cool", Anthony D’Souza’s "Blue" and Priyadarshan’s comedy flick "De Dana Dan".

Last week at Film City, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif had a tough time on the sets of Rajkumar Santoshi’s Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani, which also stars Katrina’s beau Salman Khan in a cameo role. Trouble started when Ranbir and Katrina found it rather difficult to perform a few complex dance steps by choreographer Ahmed for the song ‘Follow me’ in the film.

Katrina-Ranbir

Both Ranbir and Katrina asked Ahmed to change the steps. But Ahmed stood his ground. An exasperated Ranbir and Katrina tried their best to convince Ahmed but the choreographer did not relent. Thankfully for Ahmed, director Santoshi didn’t interfere in the matter, which was finally sorted out after Ahmed stood his ground.

A source present on the sets said, “Ranbir, Katrina and Ahmed started arguing while filming the song. While Ranbir was not getting a large part of his dance steps right, Katrina had trouble with a few steps which were given to her. Although Ranbir and Katrina put in a lot of effort, they failed to follow Ahmed’s instructions.” “To be fair to Ranbir and Katrina, the steps were not at all easy as the song is a fast one,” our source added.

Ahmed confirmed the story and said, “Ranbir as well as Katrina asked for few changes but I didn’t want to change a single move. Usually, rap songs primarily have close-up shots but this song mostly has long shots.”
Ahmed isn’t the first choreographer to have differences with actors over complex dance steps. Many other choreographers too face a problem when many actors refuse to see their choreographer’s point of view.

Ahmed said, “I have been lucky. I started my career when I was 20 years old and the actors treated me like a child. Now, the younger lot treats me like a friend. I ask actors to perform particular steps after evaluating how much and how well one can perform. For instance, I will not make Sunny Deol dance like Shahid Kapur or Aamir Khan dance like Jackie Shroff or Ranbir Kapoor like Shah Rukh Khan. They all have their limitations as well as their strengths.”

Fortunately, after much practice over three long days, Ranbir and Katrina eventually got their steps right. Ahmed said, “Finally, Ranbir and Katrina came out with flying colours. You will see the results onscreen. Even though it took a lot of hard work, in this latest song, Ranbir has danced better than he did in the title song of Bachna Ae Haseeno.” Like they say, all’s well that ends well.

The stupendous success of her latest film Ghajini has definitely pepped up this 20-year-old girl, who despite having a sexy siren's image,
happens to be a very serious and mature person deep within.

But these days, Jiah Khan has turned into a crusader of sorts. As she takes up the cause of stray animals and fights against their brutal killing, she shares some intimate thoughts with TOI.

Stray cause
Jiah has always had a glitzy and glamorous image. Not that it is surprising though, seeing that Jiah ravished the audience's imagination with her sensuous portrayal in Nishbad. But, now that she's taking up cudgels for the stray animals in Mumbai, there are many out there who will be surprised at this different avatar of hers. Try telling her this and Jiah promptly says, "It's a misconception. Whether you are a star, a teacher or anybody else, everybody has the right to support special causes. I am not making a huge statement about it, just doing whatever I can in my capacity as an individual." And what does she have to say to the faultfinders, who blasely comment that glamorous personalities casually lend their names to serious causes? Not one to cow down in the face of such questions, Jiah says with tremendous poise, "Even that helps in a way because the mediapersons at least bring the serious issues to the fore, due to celebrity presence!"

India calling!
The actress has never dithered over the fact that she admires the creativity of Aamir Khan. Having starred opposite him recently in Ghajini, is she rather disheartened by the fact that Aamir’s Taare Zameen Par has been overshadowed by Slumdog Millionaire? The forthcoming gal admits, "I am little disappointed because Taare... also deals with a serious issue and it has its own appeal. But then, I am truly thrilled over the awesome success of Slumdog...At the end of the day, it's Jai Ho India and what more could we have asked for? Our country’s making waves and that’s great!"

Rivalry or revelry?
While Jiah pertly skirts around the comparisons between Taare... and Slumdog..., what does she have to say about the rumours of rivalry between Asin and her during the making of Ghajini ? Without a moment's hesitation, Jiah says, "Whenever two actresses are working together in a film, the media likes to create stories of a rift between them. Like me, Asin too is an educated girl, who carries herself perfectly. Whenever we met, we were very cordial and sweet to each other." Now that she has put the record straight, which are the other projects that she's doing? "I am doing Housefull with Akshay, Ken Ghosh's untitled film with Shahid and another film, whose details I can't give right now," says the actress.

‘My guy would be like JFK Junior’
Not many know that this diva with raw sex appeal is an avid reader and spends hours "reading literature on Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Hinduism." Grill her more on this and she reveals, "I feel reading gives you a well-rounded approach in life. Since I am not a party gal, I just love to cuddle up in the bed with a book. Reading books on philosophy gives me a lot of contentment and widens my inner horizon." Does that mean she's decided to give romance a miss for now? Jiah laughs mysteriously and says, "Ever since I came to India, I haven't had a relationship." So, it means there was a guy in her life before that? She guffaws and answers, "Before that, I was a baby! And past one year was completely dedicated to Ghajini. My focus is on my work and I won't be able to give time to a relationship." It would surely break quite a few male hearts, but her dream guy is "JFK Junior. Rahul Gandhi is quite like him, but JFK Junior is the sexiest man in the world! My dream man would be like him!"

Amitabh has been prominent in the Light a Billion Lives campaign, which aims to bring solar power to the impoverished of the world as a source of sustainable light and energy. The Economic Forum itself will focus on the causes of the debt bubble in the US from 2000-2006 which led to the current economic recession – and the role of banks within a socially responsible economic system. As always, Amitabh is likely to be a little embarrassed by the attention and the show of attention that his legions of fans feel for him.

As far as possible, he likes to play down his superstar status and present himself and his family as ordinary people. “I never believed that I was special,” he says, “I am just blessed. I would like to be known as the son of my father Harivansh Rai Bachchan and mother Teji Bachchan. I respect my parents for bringing me up the way I am. My son Abhishek Bachchan and I want to do away with the word star. We are ordinary folks. My relationship with my son is personal and domesticated. Even before Abhishek was born, I had made up my mind that if I ever had a son he would be my friend. Abhishek is as balanced and down-to-earth by nature as I would expect anyone from our family to be.”

Amitabh’s epic tale of a business don, Sarkar, is to be remade in Mollywood by superstar Mammootty in the lead role.

Aamir Khan Film is a Bad Copy

Sunday, January 25, 2009 |

London, watch a Hollywood movie and make a copy of it in Hindi peppering it with local masala and mirch! Those were the days when films were not easily available on disks, far less so on pirated ones. However, with pirated copies of the latest Hollywood releases out in the Indian market merely days after they open in the West, Indian producers need not fly to the UK or USA to get their desi versions scripted.

The latest Aamir Khan starrer, "Ghajini," is a classic case of such repackaging. Though it has reportedly grossed Rs two billion ($ 41 million) in less than two weeks after its December 25 opening, overtaking the 1995 "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge," "Ghajini" is a rip-off from Christopher Nolan's "Memento" (2000).

Well, most people in India would not have seen "Memento," and to them "Ghajini" could well be something brand new. And with Khan's punk hairstyle (I am told the holy priests of Puri's Jagannath Temple have begun to sport this cut.) and Asin debuting in Bollywood, the movie has these pluses to push it ahead. The attractive publicity campaign must have also seduced many into the cinemas.

Were these men and women disappointed? Or, were they satisfied? We would never know, but writer-director A.R. Murugadoss' "Ghajini" (a remake from Tamil with the one in Hindi being a copy of a copy) is a wild shot in exaggerated exuberance. A romantic thriller, a psychological mish-mash and a song-and-dance extravaganza, all rolled into a 184-minute bundle, the film would leave even a veteran Bollywood fan foxed.

Nolan's central character suffering from a short-term memory loss is Murugadoss' Sanjay (Khan), a biceps exhibitionist and an unbelievably powerful business magnate with a private jet and black-suited men to escort him around as he goes about clinching money-spinning deals and doling charity. When soft spoken Sanjay meets loud-mouth upcoming model, Kalpana (Asin), bragging about her conquest of him, not realising that he is the man, a strange chemistry begins to work. Sanjay woos her without revealing who he is — not just with flowers and fragrance, but also a fabulous flat, a gift passed off as a prize won in a lottery conducted by the mobile phone company he owns.

Tragically, Kalpana, whose passion extends beyond paint and polish, costumes and catwalk, to the betterment of society angers Ghajini (Pradeep Rawat), who is into extortion and exploitation of orphan girls. He and his henchmen butcher Kalpana and batter Sanjay into a man with just a 15-minute memory. Thus challenged, he goes about with a Polaroid camera, a little notebook, huge markings on his home walls and ugly tattoos on his body – each reminding him that he must avenge his sweetheart's murder.

While a hugely transformed Sanjay goes about roaring for the kill in parts that play like a horror movie, a medical student (Jiah Khan) and a cop (Riyaz Khan) try out two different forms of investigations into the man's challenged life. At the end, in what appears like a rerun of the earlier mayhem, Ghajini tries to bludgeon the student and Sanjay. But then Bollywood baddies cannot have the last laugh and the course of a film from Mumbai's magic stables has to be predictable to the last frame.

What is not quite, though, is Aamir Khan's performance that swings from the animated to the alluring. As the man crippled by a frightening memory loss, he is angry and excellent, but as the lover he is not as convincing, a poor script being in all probability the cause. I can never understand how fashion model fails to recognise a well known businessman, and till the end she is in the dark about this. And strangely, Sanjay becomes a one-man army when he begins to pursue Ghajini. Where is Sanjay's empire? Where are the men who guarded him? Where are those who were part of his very existence? In the end, the story boils down to a pathetic picture of Jiah Khan helping a savage Sanjay take on evil.

Often the violence is sickening and the romantic hyphens that link one set of sadistic images to another in the movie's flashback-flash-forward style, provide little relief. "Ghajini" is too ghoulish for the spoonfuls of sugar to even remotely sweeten it. If it is this kind of rancid romp that audiences savour my hats off to their taste — that is if the stated theatrical admission figures are true. Given the climate of corporate deceit that prevails in India, I am not so sure.

Shilpa Shetty sure knows that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

The actress recently spent some time with beau Raj Kundra where she cooked some delicious dishes for him. “Even Shamita joined in, and helped Shilpa cook. Together they made fruit punch, Salmon and chicken appetisers with a dip, mozzarella salad, roasted parsnips vegetables and corn pulao with roasted chestnuts,” said a friend of Shilpa’s. Now that’s some treat, right Raj?

Many fans of the big-eyed beauty were shocked to hear a rumor doing the rounds that Shilpa had given the green signal to shave her hair off for a film. It is reported, that a cosmetic company aghast on hearing this news convinced her to change her plans.

But what happened really is that, Ms. Shetty did go bald for the take but with the help of bald-look-alike wigs. The actress is reported to have commented that she would have loved to shave her hair off but due to her other commitments pulled off from doing so.

Shilpa will now go bald on-screen with the help of hair make up which will make her look bald naturally. The actress has mentioned that the technicians worked for more than three hours to get that perfect bald look.

Who knows, once this film hits the screens, going bald might become the fashion statement among our women!!

Comedy is not everyone’s cup of tea. Bollywood actresses particularly aren’t known to be funny in front of the camera.

http://newshopper.sulekha.com/images/deepika_padukone.jpg

When was the last time you saw an actress doing rib-tickling comedy. Lara Dutta in No Entry? Or Kareena Kapoor in Golmaal Returns? Nope! When it comes to making the audiences laugh, it is men who take the lead while the girls, sadly, are relegated to being cosmetic beauties on celluloid.

Now, Deepika Padukone has taken the challenge to show her comic flair. And she is looking forward to stand out in a cast ensemble that has certified rib-ticklers like Akshay Kumar and Ritesh Deshmukh.

Yup! We are talking about director Sajid Khan’s next film House Full. Deepika’s role in the movie is not superficial. It is a properly etched part with a lot of comic moments. But the question that begs to be asked is whether she would be able to match the comic timing of Akshay.

The actress says she is determined to give it her best shot.

Nandana Sen bonds with Amrita Arora

Saturday, January 24, 2009 |

Catfights among actresses is nothing new, but then to strike a friendship is surprising. We hear there’s some bonding happening between NandanaSen and Amrita Arora.

 Nandana Sen and Amrita Arora

Says Nandana, “Amu is totally chilled out and fun to work with. She has an open heart and uncontroablly wild side.” Here’s to the new dosti in Bollywood.

This glam doll is bored with her single status and so badly wants to mingle.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/callravi/Rm4yE-cfMcI/AAAAAAAABjk/lRQ53ZbB1tI/celina.jpg

So when we met Celina Jaitley recently, she spoke to us candidly about pyar-vyar. Not ready for shaadi-vaadi yet, the girl wants to fall in love all over again. “

I am not really ready for marriage, but I would definitely like some love in my life. I would love to enjoy the feeling of being in love.

I have been single for almost three-and-a-half years, can you believe that?” So besides some hatke film offers, Celina is on the lookout for some love as well.

Freida Pinto, the female lead in Slumdog Millionaire, is enjoying every minute of her new-found stardom, but she’s also experienced the downsideof being in the public eye.

The off-shoulder dress she wore for the Golden Globes has come in for some criticism and when asked about it, she says, “It seemed the right choice at the time, but I’m obviously going to be more careful now.”

But, apart from that, she’s quite thrilled at the reception she got after returning to India. She says, “It’s been a great homecoming. I need to treasure these moments for the rest of my life. For someone who’s never acted before, this break was a blessing.

Working for Danny Boyle was like attending the best acting school in the world. When we started working, he told me, ‘Life isn’t always the same. Brace yourself for the world!’ The attention does get overwhelming at times and I’m still getting used to it. I’m actually quite shy.”

Sophie Chaudhary’s (pictured left) secret ambition is to win over Simon Cowell, TV producer and a judge on “American Idol”.

http://o.aolcdn.com/feedgallery/india/i/s/sophiechaudhary1/sophie05_430xx.jpg

The singer-actress has always had a weakness for the man most people are scared of. She says she would love to audition for “American Idol” because it’s her favourite show and that she is ultra confident about her singing English having been trained by the lady who taught Annie Lennox and George Michael.

In fact, many of Sophie's close friends feel she is a lot like Leona Lewis who is not only a leading singer but someone Simon discovered.

“Simon always looks for the complete package - good voice, great looks and personality plus he tends to go for warmer skin tones. It would just be a high to win over Simon,” says Sophie.

Yeah ,according to the latest buzz Minissha has gone under the knife to get a pointed nose. And that's the reason for her flaring nose these days. The actress is miffed about these rumours.

"Anyone says anything they want!" says Lamba who turned another year old only recently. However 'cosmetic correction' has long been the practice in Bollywood.

Koena Mitra has been doing her bit by telling all and sundry to stay away from the surgeries. She has learnt through her mistake and has vowed never to settle for the knife ever again. Some cutting truths, these.

But then the actor always 'knows' best!

Ghajini Vs. Ghajini

Friday, January 23, 2009 |

Expectations, expectations and more expectations. Every movie has its fair share of it. Some less
and some more. Regardless, it always seems to be a reason behind a film's success. If it exceeds Justify Fullor meets expectations they say its a success, and if it falls below then a failure.

For Ghajini these very expectations came in all shapes and sizes. First and foremost, thanks to Aamir Khan. How can a project not have sky high expectations when associated with it is the acclaimed perfectionist of Indian cinema. Secondly, being the remake of a hit and acclaimed Tamil film, Ghajini was already expected to win the hearts of audiences. Lastly, the leading lady and director remained the same in this counterpart, so naturally it was expected that they would combine the same successful ingredients this time around with Aamir Khan to deliver yet another masterpiece. Did they succeed or does the original remain the one and only masterpiece? Read on to find out…

Drawing contrasts between the two version of Ghajini is quite difficult because director A R Muragadoss remained quite true to his original masterpiece. In fact, rarely did they differ from the original dialogues. Of course one does not blame him the least bit. Why sabotage something that is already a hit formula. Although, some small tweaks were made in the script and screenplay to prepare it to appeal for its new targeted audience. Unlike Tamil cinema audiences, Hindi cinema audiences may not have the stomach for the violence that Tamil cinema is accustomed to. The makers rewrote small sequences in the action segments of the film which was a very wise decision to ensure appeal to its new audience. In addition, the glamour quotient has been raised in particular for song sequences, perhaps with a higher production value (merely a speculation). However, A R Muragadoss didn’t stray off completely from the true essence of Ghajini, which is that at heart it remains an action packed adventure so definitely don’t go in expecting a totally action-toned-down version of the Tamil Ghajini.

The main focus of drawing contrasts that perhaps you are interested in is the performances. Was the perfectionist really perfect for the role? Was Jiah the right counterpart to Nayantara? The former is a difficult question that we’ll get to in due time but the latter is quite easily answered. And that is no. Jiah Khan simply did not look the part of a final year medical student. Perhaps this role should have come at the time of her career when her talent had been better groomed. As for now, the maturity required for the character was certainly not present in Jiah’s performance. She did not look or act the part. One wonders why Nayantara wasn’t brought over for the role like Asin had been or why Kangana Ranaut didn’t remain signed on. After witnessing Jiah’s performance, you’re almost certain anyone would be better than her.

Surya Shivkumar was the original Tamil actor who did the role of Sanjay Singhania (originally Sanjay Ramasamy), and when one has witnessed his performance it is hard to imagine that someone else can step into the same shoes. Although, it can safely be said that Aamir Khan came very damn close to delivering an as perfect performance, and in fact it is almost impossible to think of anyone else in the Hindi film industry who’d do justice to the part. Aamir’s performance is both endearing and heart breaking depending on what was required, particularly in the opening sequence where the audiences discover his mental situation. You really feel the pain of a man who everyday has to wake up and find out that the woman he loved the most in this world is no longer in it. The only sequence, in comparison to the original, in which Aamir fails is bringing across the expression of confusion. Surya was more successful in bringing across the emotions of a man who is constantly lost but still is on a mission that he is not too sure about what it is anymore. This was a particular highlighted expression in the original introduction sequence of Sanjay where he is beating up Ghajini’s goons but at the same time is very lost as to what he is doing or why he is doing it. In order to successfully convey this situation a better use of background score was also needed. Like our very own reviewer, Aly Kassam, pointed out in his review of Ghajini, the background score was amateurish in various portions. Even though it may seem as if it doesn’t contribute much to the performance of an actor, it certainly does contribute in getting across a character’s situation because it creates an atmosphere of emotions for the audiences to feel.

Lastly, the music of the original was a chartbuster to say the least, and it was very wise to entrust this big responsibility upon the man that never fails, A R Rahman. Of course picturisation was bollywood-fied without any typical Tamilian numbers such as 'Rangola' in the original, which would not have been a hit up North as much as down South.

On the whole, Ghajini vs. Ghajini would be a battle that ends with a tie, expected because the captain of the ship remains the same. Ghajini is a remake in its true essence. It pays tribute to a fantastic movie and has simply been tailored and translated for its new group of audiences, nothing more and nothing else. Audiences of the original, do not fear as justice has been done to your masterpiece. Fans of the remake, be proud of a fantastic piece of cinema that has been so intelligently crafted. It is a masterpiece that will go down in the history of Indian cinema. Take a bow the team of Ghajini!

It seems one movie per year resolution is going to be null for Aamir Khan who will start working for a cricket-based film as soon as he finishes 3 Idiots .

http://www.hamaraphotos.com/bollywood/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/aamir-khan.jpg

The movie, titled ‘Ferrari Ki Sawaari’, has cricket as the central subject. Aamir, who is riding high on success with Ghajini making records at the box office, was the natural choice for producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra . And guess what? The actor is learnt to have given his nod to the project.

The film is conceived by Rajesh Mapuskar, who was once associated with Rajkumar Hirani . Now, according to sources, Rajesh’s idea has been well received by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. In fact Vidhu will co-write the script for the film.

Aamir, who is currently working for Vidhu and Hirani in ‘3 Idiots’, has already impressed the duo with his fine acting and perfectionist streak. ‘Ferrari Ki Sawaari’ is about a young boy who gets attracted to a cricketer’s Ferrari car and dreams of playing cricket in reality.

For the Perfectionist Khan, a project has to be extraordinary to spark his interest. And it seems ‘Ferrari Ki Sawaari’ promises that.

Aishwarya Rai has been ranked higher than American singer Beyonce in the most desirable women's list in a poll conducted by leading men's portal AskMen.Com.

The annual survey titled 'Top 50 Most Desirable Woman in the World' had Ash at the 48th spot while Beyonce rounds the list off on the 50th position.

The survey which asked voters to select their ideal partner based on 'intelligence, charisma and ambition' was topped by American actress Eva Mendes. Some other prominent names on the list were Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson, Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, Heidi Klum and Jessica Alba.

Aishwarya who will be seen in the Pink Panther sequel this year along with some Hollywood big wigs like Steve Martin and Andy Garcia. Incidentally Beyonce had starred with Martin in the 2006 remake of the 1964 original starring Peter Sellers.

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, who had stoked a controversy by slamming Slumdog Millionaire, Friday said the movie was "wonderful" and expressed happiness that composer AR Rahman won three Oscar nominations for his score and songs in the movie.

http://www.freshnews.in/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/amitabh1.jpg

"The sound engineer of this wonderful movie Slumdog Millionaire, Rasool, an Indian, has also won a nomination along with Rahman. I am so happy. Bhanu Athaiya was the last Indian to win an Oscar for the designing the costumes of Richard Attenborough's Gandhi in 1982," Bachchan said at an overflowing venue at the Jaipur Literature Festival.

Referring to his comment regarding Slumdog Millionaire that "the film projects India as Third World's dirty underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots", he said, "I write a blog. But the opinions expressed in my blog were not my own. So many people write on my blog site and I was just quoting one of them. I have spoken to Anil Kapoor and Danny Boyle and cleared the misgivings. But everyone must have freedom of expression."

The superstar was here for a day to release his biography, Bachchanalia: The Films and Memorabilia of Amitabh Bachchan, spanning 40 years of his career in the Hindi film industry.

The book – co-authored by Mumbai-based author Bhawana Somaaya and the Mumbai-based auction house and archive OSIAN's Centre for Archiving, Research and Development (CARD) wing – is the maiden publication of Osian's publishing and design department. Founder and chairman of OSIAN's Neville Tuli was in conversation with the superstar.

Bachchan, clad in a pink shirt and a black velvet blazer, cut an amenable figure as he fielded queries from his host and the audience alike. "Indian cinema is gaining global acceptance. I was in Paris two weeks ago for Salon Du Cinema, a festival of world films, where India and my family were the focus this time.

"I realised that the Indian movie industry was being acknowledged and Hindi movies were being shown on television channels in countries like France, Germany and all over Europe – even in those European nations where there had been no awareness about Indian movies before."

"If you want a personal and an honest opinion, I think Indian movies are paramount. They don't fall short in any way globally – be it in terms of cinematography, content or the cast. I am very happy with the kind of movies we are making. The Oscar is in its place – the fact that they have decided to nominate one of our artistes is heartening," Bachchan said.

The superstar held forth on a variety of subjects – ranging from his relationship with his son, reading habits, concern for junior artistes in Mumbai, secular fabric of the country and his own life. Striking a patriotic note, the Bollywood veteran said he was proud to be a movie star.

"I'm proud to be in the profession because once people walk into a movie theatre they forget the identity of those with whom they are sharing the hall. You do not ask if the person seated next to you is a Hindu, Sikh, Christian or a Muslim. We watch the same emotions, cry over the same grief and sing the same songs. I think the integrated India lies inside the movie halls of this country," Bachchan said.

The superstar was emphatic that his angry young man image, which had a created a new metaphor in Indian cinema after his hit action movie, Zanjeer, was not setting a violent precedent among the youth. "For every angry young man, I have played a benign Anthony bhai (Amar Akbar Anthony). The maximum violence as I read in the papers happens in Bihar," he said.

"The history of this country is more than 1,000 years old – I don't want to look down upon the younger generation. You have to give space to each generation to progress," he said.

As a model citizen of India, Bachchan said his dream was to ensure that every Indian should know, understand and follow the Constitution and work together for an integrated country – especially in these troubled times of terror.

Sonam Kapoor’s whacky persona in ‘Delhi 6’ is getting quite popular of late. Not only are Sonam’s costumes in the film becoming a rage, but even her bindaas attitude has been noticed by all.

http://www.sonamkapoorwow.com/sonam-kapoor/sonam-kapoor-wallpaper11.jpg

For all those who are wondering what Sonam is doing in the film, let us tell you the girl plays an aspiring singer!

“My character in the film dreams of achieving her goal in the world of music and that’s why you see me doing riyaaz in the film promos,” Sonam revealed.

Let’s hope that this one at least manages to strike the right chord... and doesn’t go awry like the musical Saawariya ! We are keeping our fingers crossed.
